How to Enjoy the Riverfront

Step 1

Start in Coolidge Park. Located just off the Market Street Bridge, which connects downtown attractions like the Tennessee Aquarium to the hip North Shore shopping district, Coolidge Park is the perfect place for a picnic in the shade. It is covered in thick, green grass, a stone stage, whimsical fountains and an indoor, hand-carved wooden carousel (see Resources below).
Step2
Take a stroll on the Riverwalk. This paved path parallels the Tennessee River and passed straight through Coolidge Park. Marked with blue handrails, it connects the Chickamauga Dam to Ross’s Landing Park downtown. At 13 miles long, it is a popular spot for walkers, bikers and those who simply want to gaze at the water below.
Step3
Loop around to Frazier Avenue. Located just off Coolidge Park, Frazier Avenue is one of Chattanooga’s hippest places to shop at locally owned boutiques. With a used book store (A Novel Idea), an upscale shoe store (Embellish), eclectic gifts (Blue Skies and Go Fish) and a crabshack canteen (NorthShore Grille), you’ll find an afternoon full of browsing.
Step4
Walk across the Walnut Street Bridge to the Bluff View Art District. A 2,376-foot walkway crossing the Tennessee River, it’s one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the world. Once you reach the end, turn left towards the Hunter Museum of American Art and its next door galleries and restaurants, once an upscale Chattanooga neighborhood, purchased and restored after it’s dilapidation by local businessman Charles Portera. For a quick hand-dipped chocolate and a cup of warm, locally roasted coffee, be sure to stop in Rembrandt’s Coffee House.
Step5
Stop in--and behind--the Tennessee Aquarium. Walk back past the Walnut Street Bridge and down the hill to Broad Street, then take a right. The Tennessee Aquarium is in the modern, glass-pyramid style buildings at the end of the road. Backing up to the near shore of the Tennessee River, the aquarium recently added a 70-passenger high-speed catamaran to its collection. Visitors can board the River Gorge Explorer and join a staff member on a tour of the city’s protected waterfront habitats and wildlife

Tips & Warnings

  • Bring cash or a credit card to pay the digital meters at Coolidge Park. Your best bet will be to leave your car in the lot all day and walk the Walnut Street Bridge back and forth to both sides of downtown.
  • Pets are not allowed on the Walnut Street Walking Bridge.

Walnut Street Bridge
World's Longest Pedestrian Bridge

Erected in 1890, the Walnut Street Bridge was the first to connect Chattanooga's downtown with the North Shore. Structural modifications have been made to turn the bridge into what is now a pedestrian walkway. The 1/2-mile span is the longest pedestrian bridge in the world and very popular among local residents. Providing spectacular views of Coolidge Park, the Tennessee Aquarium and the Riverfront, the bridge is available for weddings and special events.
Hosts many local far like Wine over Water annually.
